The South-African Secrets We’re Stealing From Your New Favorite La-based Luxury Skincare Brand
Because apparently Marula oil has magical powers.
Sorry to sound like a broken record on this, but if you haven’t already discovered the magic that is the facial oil, you need one in your life, like right now. If you didn’t already know, oils are highly volatile, which makes them able to be very quickly absorbed into the skin’s tissue. When they are applied to the skin, oils can be penetrated into the dermis on a cellular level (!), which is, in part, why we rave about them so much. But that’s not the only great thing about oils. Most people assume they need powder to combat their oiliness, but really what they need is oil. Oils balance out the skin and controls sebum production. That’s why moisturizing with an oil makes perfect sense, especially for anyone with combination, oily, blemished or stressed skin. Yes, you read that right. Oils will not make your oiliness worse (we’ve been over this, but you know, reminders never hurt). If you break out from an oil, that means it’s probably not the right blend for you. But please don’t just give up on oils completely! Find one that’s targeted for what you want, and use it alone so it’s super concentrated.
Ever since incorporating oils into our skincare routine last year, we’ve been completely addicted to oils (if you’ve been reading on GOCO for some time, you, of course, know this already). They have completely changed the texture and temperament of our skin – it’s so much more balanced! And just when we thought it couldn’t get any better, we try the African Botanics Neroli Infused Marula Oil. You’ve heard us rave about argan oil, but allow us to introduce you to its distant sister Marula oil, which has 16% more antioxidants than the aforementioned argan oil.
Best oil you’ve ever tried
This oil is light, hydrating and completely non-greasy. Not only is it certified organic, biodynamic, and wildcrafted, it’s also cold-pressed and unrefined – the quality is beyond exceptional. It absorbs right into your skin, and so it ends up feeling like a typical moisturizer. Not like you’re in doused in pizza grease.
Here’s a fun fact for you: neroli – an essential oil produced from the flowers of orange trees commonly known for its rejuvenating, anti-inflammatory, antiseptic and skin balancing properties – is an antidepressant. Here us out, there’s actual science to back this up, we promise, which probably explains why we feel like we’ve been temporarily teleported to some vast foreign land when we apply this oil.
Bottom line, if you want to do something extra special for your skin, get this oil. If you’ve never heard of Marula oil and are sort of curious to see if it’s actually any good, get this oil. If you…doesn’t matter, just get this oil. You will have better skin, guaranteed. And BTW, we never guarantee anything, so you know it’s good.
For us, having super clean (but never stripped) skin is one of the most important things when it comes to preventing breakouts since our acne is mostly non-cystic and non-hormonal. So we really appreciate a physical exfoliant, especially a gentle one like their Buchu Botanical Enzyme Polish. Buchu, if you’re wondering, is a heather-like plant found in South Africa that’s used for its (highly aromatic) fragrance and medicinal properties. But never mind all that (kinda). The important thing to takeaway is that this scrub is incredible! This fresh-skin-in-a-jar has so many other amazing things in it: crushed Baobab fruit sourced from the southern tip of Africa, Micro-Algae and fine granules of ancient volcanic minerals.
In the same vain, their Mineral Cleansing Mask is our new go-to when our skin feels like complete shit. Every so often, no matter how good we’ve been to our skin, it still manages to freak out. We’re talking clogged pores and yes, breakouts. This mask is great because it does a lot without being super harsh to your skin.
