Introducing Líta, The Real Toothpaste

AKA, the most high-quality, beautifully designed natural toothpaste you've never heard of, but *have* to try.

By: Dani

Admit it: You kind of seriously love discovering cool shit before it’s on everyone else’s top shelf.

We don’t know about you, but in this whole natural word, there’s so much conflicting information out there – all from top *experts* we should add – that sometimes we get so confused, we don’t know what the hell to use. Especially when it comes to toothpaste. (Comment below if you feel us on this one!) Fluoride or no fluoride? Rinse or don’t rinse? Toothpaste or just plain water? (Yes, we’ve heard this one before.)

Ahhh, so frustrating, right?

That’s why we talked to Jake, creator of Estrella, to set the record straight…finally. Not only does he have his own line of natural toothpastes, but Jake’s father is a dentist and taught him everything he knows about oral care, specifically natural oral care. Which is why it’s no surprise that his toothpaste is so damn good.

If you’ve tried other natural toothpastes, but aren’t convinced that any of them actually do enough for your teeth (and gums!), then look no further. This toothpaste will seriously have you ditching your usual squeeze before you can pronounce the first five ingredients in your old toothpaste. While the texture is slightly different than what you’re probably use to, it’s nothing too weird. It’s actually pretty similar to most conventional baking-soda-based toothpastes. And here’s another cool thing: there’s no “after-taste”, but your mouth still feels really clean. BTW, Dr. David Villarreal, Jake’s dad, is the original formulator of Líta.

It’s one of the best natural toothpastes on the market, definitely in our top three. Oh, and just for the record, all Estrella products are non-GMO, biodegradable, fluoride-free, sodium lauryl sulfate-free, triclosan-free, carrageenan-free, gluten-free, sugar-free, free of artificial flavors, colors, heavy metals and synthetic chemicals, and vegan. But we’ll let Jake tell you the rest…

Father knows best

“The most important thing I learned from my father was the importance of mouth health. Having a healthy mouth can have much more positive benefits than just having white teeth and no cavities. If you floss, brush thoroughly, drink plenty of water and minimally eat acidic foods, your mouth can affect your body positively as a whole.”

Plant-based was the only option

“It was important because my father was very frustrated with natural toothpastes’ efficacy, feel, etc. Especially the way they tasted. He couldn’t get his patients to stick with them and they would go back to conventional ones just because they liked the taste. He decided to formulate his own formula with specific, healthy ingredients that would have the familiarity of a conventional toothpaste and a pleasant taste that came purely from the herbs and essential oils used. We didn’t want any active, synthetic ingredients hindering our customers’ long-term mouth health.”

Guys, Estrella’s self-proclaimed “realness” ain’t no stunt

“‘The Real Toothpaste’ is a statement. A statement that our vision is an authentic stride towards creating not only toothpaste but beautifully designed oral care products that merge the ideals of health, design, beauty, simplicity, sustainability and convenience. We’re striving for a real solution to a congested market. We want our customers to not have to think twice about purchasing our products. We want to provide them with the best combination of dental science and pure, healthy ingredients. We want to create the most beautiful oral care products you’ve ever seen. Inside and out.”

Finally a definitive answer to the fluoride debate

“Fluoride is beneficial to promoting tooth development and preventing cavities when the right amount is used. However, the risks from over-fluoridation (fluorosis) outweigh the benefits. The percentage of acquiring too much fluoride increases with the amount of sources it comes from. From the fluoride in our water supply to the dental products we use, we can increase our chances at having fluorosis in a lot of ways. The most prevalent side effects from fluorosis are white spots on your teeth to staining and pitting. Fluoride can also be concentrated in bone. When that happens, is stimulates bone cell growth, alters the tissue’s structure, and weakens the skeleton. High levels of fluoride may also be toxic to brain and nerve cells. Therefore, until further research can establish the proper level of fluoride consumption that leads to healthy teeth and prevents any fluorosis, than we choose to not use fluoride in our products since there are other sources in our daily lives in which we can acquire a lot of fluoride. If you wish to learn more, check out the research the Harvard School of Public Health has conducted.”

If you want pearly whites, try Blanco

“Activated charcoal works through the chemical process of adsorption. That being said you have activated charcoal binding to the debris and foreign anaerobic bacteria one picks up throughout their day and pulls it from the mouth. It also targets tannins which make it a powerful and effective stain-remover. It leaves the teeth feeling clean and refreshed while looking their whitest, all without the use of synthetic whitening complexes.”

Natural toothpastes really do work better

“Natural toothpastes do a good job of cleaning your teeth and gums without the use of harmful synthetic ingredients. However, most natural toothpastes focus so much on the features of their ingredients that the delivery (feeling) and taste of their toothpastes suffer. This is where conventional products have had the edge. Their formulas have worked well for a long time due to the fact that they can provide you with white, clean teeth by making the feeling and texture comfortable and the taste appealing. Yet, they contain harmful ingredients that are poisonous if swallowed and may have adverse long term health effects. Our toothpastes bridge the gap. We created a toothpaste that has pure, straight-from-Mother-Nature ingredients that serve specific purposes in order to keep the mouth healthy, while using progressive dental science to create a comfortable delivery system that feels like a normal toothpaste when you’re brushing your teeth but tastes delightful and refreshing due to real flavors from our essential oils. Also, we use non-toxic materials to ensure that our products are swallow-safe.”

Onto the gorgeous packaging

“I wanted the focus to be minimal because I wanted to go quiet when the competition went loud. I wanted our toothpaste to be the cool, mysterious stranger in the corner rather than the obnoxious loud mouth trying to gain everyone’s attention. We are confident enough in our formula to show the ingredients for what they are and then focus on elevating toothpaste in a way that hasn’t been done before. We want to set a new standard both inside and out for toothpaste. For all of oral care for that matter. It starts with our formula and ends with the packaging. We want beauty in every stage of products. From their inception to their delivery.”

On the whole no-toothpaste-just-water thing

“Yes, you can only use water and your toothbrush, but the question then is how to do you care for the structures that support your teeth, like the gums? How do you get the bacteria that can’t be cleaned by water? If you use a toothpaste to clean your teeth, you will be taking better care of your mouth for the long term. Your chances at having tooth decay and cavities will increase is you do not use a toothpaste at least twice a day. Also, there’s a greater chance that you’ll have bad breath and dry gums which can lead to halitosis and gingivitis.”

Good find. I know I’ve talked to you guys about this before; but I’m working my way through my Tom’s and Marvis stash (none of which are that impressive to me). I had Theodent and a neem product on my list as well. I may just give them up and try this one because I am a sucker for packaging. And I like what’s NOT in this product as much as what’s in it.

    • Yes, we say give this one a try. It really does give you that clean feeling without any of the burning or after-taste. The texture is easy to work with, and yes, no nasty ingredients at all 🙂
