Green Is The New Glam, Like Duh

In case you don't believe us, take it from Citrine Beauty Bar’s founder, Melissa Lenberg.

We don’t drink. But a bar filled with top-notch products all made with natural ingredients? Now that sounds more like happy hour to us. The beauty bar that’s coming up on it’s five-year anniversary carries some of the most luxurious all natural products including some of our faves: Tata Harper, RMS Beauty, Kjaer Weiss, May Lindstrom. Behind it all is Melissa Lenberg who has been at creating a go-to spot for clean beauty since she packed up everything and moved to LA from Arizona. Keep reading for her thoughts on launching her own business, why you need to invest in your skin, her top five beauty picks for summer and more.

On what sparked her passion for natural, clean beauty.

“Most people, especially those of us in the health and wellness community, have this desire to find ways to use our talents and passion to help people.  My personal health concerns may have been the driving factor in the pursuit for health-conscious beauty products, but that ignited an idea that had been somewhere inside me for a long time. I knew that I wasn’t the only one who deserved to have products that were safe, effective, and luxurious. Following that craving and seeing all the amazing things that have come from that decision has truly been so rewarding.”

What it was like launching Citrine

“I mean starting a business is a big adventure. There are still times I just lay in bed, and the only thing I can say to my boyfriend is “Remind me why I did this… WTF.” But I knew I could use my experience and talents to create an experience that was entirely different than anything currently in the industry, and it was one of the best decisions I ever made.”

On the misconceptions about natural beauty

“Natural beauty used to be the ugly duckling of the industry, literally. Five years ago, when I started the store, the terms “natural beauty” or “green beauty” were barely being talked about and there was nothing for women who valued efficacy and luxury. There are so many people out there who care about their health and care about animals and the environment that don’t wear hemp bras or compost in their backyard. Those women are amazing, and I applaud their commitment, but I wanted to appeal to a wider audience. We no longer have to make a sacrifice. Green is effective. Green is luxurious. Green is Glam. I think the fact that these brands [that Citrine carries] are being used by celebrities, professional artists, and being featured in magazines, like Vogue and Cosmo, are a true reminder that it’s working!”

The three products she can’t live without during summer

“Right now I’m in the process of formulating my skincare line which is, well, obviously a dream! I used to use like 10-million products a day so creating this line has obviously helped me cut back, but when you’re a true junkie like me you just can’t help it! I have a few secret things I’ve been working so that’s a good portion of my current regimen but a few things I will always love are:

The May Lindstrom Good Stuff Body Oil is the shit! It’s one of those products that just make you feel automatically sexy. Its scent comes from the essential oils of ylang-ylang, jasmine, and cocoa. I mean is there anything more delectable than smelling like a sexy chocolate bar?!

The Patyka Radiant Cleansing Ritual is another summer favorite. It’s a three-step routine with an oil cleanse, a foam cleanse (sulfate-free obviously), and a hydration toner. It truly gives your skin that equilibrium between being thoroughly cleanser but also really hydrated and renewed. It’s especially great for anti-aging because of all the fruit enzymes and acids that are used to gently exfoliate the skin.

I’m also way too obsessed with The Beauty Chef products right now. The Hydration Inner Beauty Boost is a liquid concoction of bio-fermented super foods and coconut water to sustain gut health. Beauty begins in the body so just dropping a little into your water every morning makes a huge difference. I may or may not have OD’d on this stuff once…or twice.”

Melissa’s go-to summer makeup look + products she uses

“I have literally perfected the full 5-min face that is my go-to look. All my Citrine Girls make fun of me for how routine my makeup is, I only ever change my lip and maybe my eye colors if I’m not running 5-years later per usual.

I do a few layers of the Jane Iredale BB Cream, it’s full coverage and it has SPF which is super important for natural gingers like me.

Next, I set that with the Jane Iredale Powder, this gives me extra coverage but also makes sure I don’t get overly dewy. People ask me how I keep my glow even though I wear powder, the secret is leaving the cheeks un-powdered so that glow Is still able to shine through.

Highlight gives me life. Literally. even when I haven’t slept in days — I just apply a cream highlighter to the tops of the cheeks and cupids bow for a super glam and luminous glow. I have a few I wear but some of my current favorites are the Jane Iredale Peaches & Cream which has a unique rose gold undertone or the KW Radiance which is more of a mauve based incandescence.

I honestly believe a dramatic lash and a glossy lip can take you anywhere. I wear Battington Lashes in Monroe religiously and line my lips with Jane Iredale Nutmeg Liner and finish it off with the super glossy Jane Iredale Puregloss in Snowberry or Ice Mocha.

The product she recommends to all her friends

“I tell all my friends about the Honey Mud by May Lindstrom. Sometimes I picture myself in a back alley slinging it after dark because of the sheer intensity I have when I talk about it. It is the best mask out there though. Bottom line, your skin will have never felt more luxurious!”

She’s a makeup artist, but a skincare junkie

“Makeup is where I can express my creativity, but skincare is just so much more than that for me. It’s where my passion and purpose collide.”

Her perfect-skin secrets…that she’s willing to share

“Always have a skin oil on hand. There are a million reasons why your skin could wake up looking lifeless, too many drinks the night before, you’ve got a cold coming on, the baby kept you up all night, but whatever the reason I guarantee a great skin oil can fix it. I love the new Kjaer Weis The Beautiful Oil — the name, the rosey scent, the packaging. It doesn’t get any more luxurious than that!

Invest in your skin. I think women get so wrapped up in the idea that injectables are a substitute for not taking care of your skin. Personally, I believe that there are many simple ways to prevent aging at the source like double cleansing, masking, and eating clean.”

If this is you, STOP doing this

“Cakey foundation/wrong color foundation is a no. We all have that one friend in our squad whose foundation always looks a little “off.” If you don’t have any idea what I’m talking about- chances are, it’s you. Your natural skin should shine through; it’s beautiful! Stop covering it up!

Not moisturizing to avoid shiny skin. You can’t just get oily skin; you’re born with it. Moisturizing is still essential for any skin type, and there are other ways to maintain a shine-free t-zone all day without dehydrating your skin!

Laying out instead of sunless tanning. Today your skin may be glowing golden, 10 years down the road it’s eBay style “very-used/ pre-owned” faux Gucci. Sunless tanning has come so far, and we carry so many products that provide a healthy glow that isn’t damaging skin. There is no reason to cook yourself anymore.”
