You’d Probably Never Guess This Unpopular Secret To Preventing Breakouts

No spoilers here...

If you have temperamental skin: 1. You’re lucky. 2. We kinda hate you a little. 3. Actually, we hate you a lot.

We’re the types who can have amazing skin days for weeks…then all of a sudden it wants to freak the eff out and ruin literally everything in our lives. Even after going through an eight-month treatment of Accutane, sometimes our skin is just not feeling us. Even though our skin is significantly less oily, it’s always going to be a constant struggle to prevent breakouts.

We rely on amazing skincare not only to help prevent breakouts, but to manage any residual scarring. OSEA Malibu is one of our favorite natural skincare brands (FYI: the entire line is cruelty-free, vegan, free of synthetic chemicals and was the first company to sign “Compact for Safe Cosmetics”) and we couldn’t think of anyone better to go to than Founder Jenefer Palmer for an in-depth convo about, you guessed it, preventing and managing breakouts. Spoiler alert: consistent and thorough hydrating is *essential* to maintaining smooth, anti-breakout skin.

(Psst: if you missed our review of some favorites from the line, go here.)

Seriously, it’s all about hydration

“Hydration is KEY for oily and blemish-prone skin types — both inside and out. When your skin is dehydrated, you actually produce more oil, which can contribute to more blemishes. Use a lightweight moisturizer, such as Blemish Balm to balance your complexion and drink plenty of pure water.”

Lay off the bottle

“Toners that contain alcohol are very drying to the skin. They cause the oil glands to go into overdrive and produce more oil. Gentle natural toners are best. Sea Minerals Mist, rich in organic seaweed & aloe tones and hydrates skin while balancing impurities.”

It’s all about finding that perfect balance

“Many have the misconception that drying out your skin with ingredients like benzoyl peroxide is the only way to treat blemishes. Overdrying your skin actually worsens the problem. If you have blemish-prone skin, you should be looking for products that balance, not dry.”

The perfect blemish-fighting routine

“Mineralizing seaweed, organic botanicals and pure essential oils are an effective plant-based alternative to harsh synthetic preparations in the treatment of blemishes. I’d recommend cleansing with Ocean Cleansing Mudd, toning with Sea Minerals Mist, addressing stubborn spots with Essential Corrective Complex and moisturizing with Blemish Balm. They are also available in our cute travel size starter set.”

When the weather’s cold and dry…

“Prep your blemish-prone skin for the cold, dry weather in fall/winter by keeping your moisturizer and mist on hand. I mist several times a day in winter. Hydration is EVERYTHING.”

Don’t be afraid of non-comedogenic oils

Facial oils are good for everything — including balancing blemish-prone skin. They are packed with vitamins, antioxidants and essential fatty acids to nourish all skin types.”

The best thing you can do for your skin

“Stop eating [processed] sugar. It literally robs your body of nutrients and causes inflammation. It is really hard for a few weeks to go without sugar, but then the craving disappears. I know quitting sugar isn’t easy, but as you are reaching for that sweet delight, remember that sugar = wrinkles.”

How to avoid buildup

“Cleanse every day, including before and after working out. A few times a week, use a purifying mask such as Red Algae Mask to decongest and remove impurities.”
