Top 17 Products We’ve Tried In 2017
Oh yes. The moment you've been waiting for is finally here.
By: Amber x Dani
We don’t think we’d be alone in saying that 2017 was not an easy year. This year has been a very trying twelve months full of wrecks, disappointments and letdowns (ahem…Trump…among other things). But you know what didn’t let us down? All of the bomb-ass products that we’re about to talk about. We’re going to try to limit the use of superlatives because all of these products are incredible, amazing and fantastic, which is why they’re on this list (but don’t hold us to that). We have a lot of products to get through so we’ll jump right into it.
Royal Fern Anti-Aging Face Cream
Hands down, this is the best face cream we’ve ever tried. We wish it weren’t true, because it’s so damn expensive, but it is, guys. It really is and it’s worth the investment. The texture is super light and feels like nothing on top of the skin. The formula sinks in immediately so you really feel hydrated after application. And the smell is fresh and subtle, which is always great. Nothing bad to say about this cream and really excited to try out the other products in the dermatologically-tested line, especially the Phytoactive Hydra-Firm Intense Mask and Phytoactive Anti-Aging Serum.
Ellis Brooklyn Body Milk in Myth
Before this body lotion, we were not convinced on the whole body lotion/milk thing. We preferred a cream or oil to moisturize our body because they seemed to get the job done better. Not anymore. When done right, AKA this Ellis Brooklyn formula – lotions can be extremely moisturizing and satisfying and not just filled with junk that makes you feel like you’re properly moisturized when you’re not. This one sinks right into the skin and smells incredible. Myth is our favorite, but it doesn’t really matter which scent you try because they’re all equally impressive.
Herbivore Botanicals Rose + Hibiscus Spray
Of all the rose-infused facial sprays we’ve tried this year, and trust us, we tried at least a dozen (obsessed much?), this one is our favorite. It’s really the balance of rose and hibiscus that makes is super refreshing, which we look for in a facial spray. The coconut water base is also such a perfect compliment to the rose, and the bottle has the perfect sprayer.
The Ordinary 2% Retinol Serum
This is hands down the most gentle retinol serum we’ve ever tried, and that saying a lot given that we’ve been using some form of a retinoid since high school. There’s no redness, dryness or flaking when you use this serum, yet you can clearly see results after only 4-8 weeks after using it. If you’re looking to introduce a retinol product into your regimen, try this one – it’s less than $10, you have nothing to lose.
Kavaldon Candle in Empress
Just thinking about the scent of this candle makes us smile. Kavaldon has some of the most layered, high-quality, beautiful perfumed candles on the market, so needless to say, we loveall of their scents, but this one has a special place in our hearts. It so rich and textured, like them all, it fills the room in less than ten minutes. So glad we discovered this brand, seriously.
Honest Beauty Organic Facial Oil
We have a whole post dedicated to this oil (here, if you missed it) because it’s just that good. The formula is lightweight and melts into the skin almost instantly, making it wearable for both daytime and nighttime. On top of that, the scent is absolutely divine.
Joanna Vargas Rescue Serum
This is one of the few products that we’ve tried that actually provide visible results as soon as we started using it. The main workhorse in this oil-serum is Vitamin C, which is great for brightening and evening the skin tone. After using it for one week our skin was so much brighter, it was almost unbelievable. It’s also very moisturizing.
Saya Skincare Foaming Cleanser
This was the first gentle and 100% natural face wash that we were impressed by. This wash foams up, and doesn’t leave your face with that stripped, tight feeling. Your skin feels slightly moisturized, but totally clean. The fact that majority of the ingredients are organic, like all of Saya’s products, is a huge plus.
Soveral Floral Rain Toning Mist
Amazing smell. Super refreshing. Perfect sprayer. The only (minor) thing we have to complain about with this is the price. It’s $60 a pop. Kind of annoying, only because we freaking love this stuff.
Osea Ocean Cleansing Mudd
This is one of the most physically satisfying, natural cleansers you’ll ever try. You feel all of the actives working as you massage the formula into your skin. it contains tea tree oil, which is our hero ingredient since we’ve transitioned off of using (gasp!) 10% benzoyl peroxide daily. It’s perfect for balancing out the skin, which is essential for acne-prone and otherwise problematic skin types. Wish we could just have a five bottles of this so we never run out.
Oskia Renaissance Mask
The texture of this exfoliator is so different than any other exfoliant we’ve ever tried. First of all, the texture is more of a cream than anything else. After rinsing, our skin looks so smooth and even and is so soft! It’s a gentle exfoliator, which is a skincare step we’ve made sure to do this year weekly, bi-weekly if possible.
Chantecaille Rose de Mai Facial Oil
This is everything we love in one gorgeous glass bottle. Oils are amazing at sealing in moisture, so whenever we’re feeling dry or mostly as a preventative measure, we seal our moisturizing cream with a few drops of this. We’re big fans of the main two oils, RoseHip, Evening Primrose because they’re both ideal is your skin is prone to breakouts.
F. Miller Toning Mist
At this point you’re probably like, “Another face spray?” Well, yes, but we promise they’re all different and all worth a try, especially if you’re into misting like we are. This one contains aloe vera, which is so soothing, and witch hazel, our favorite ingredient for toners. This spray is perfect for toning after washing or updating your face with a dewy glow midday.
Kypris Beauty 1,000 Roses Elixir
Not going to lie, this is a very expensive product. But it’s *actually* worth it. The texture is more of an oil, but it works like a serum in that your skin really pulls a lot of the actives so it’s super effective. And, of course, the smell is amazing.
Osea Blemish Balm
If you have super reactive or acne-prone skin like we do, this is a great way to prevent breakouts without having to add a step to your routine. The tea tree oil has an instant cooling effect on the skin, which is so soothing, especially on warmer days. This formula is extremely lightweight and won’t clog your pores. Also love that it comes in a pump bottle. Always convenient.
Joanna Vargas Exfoliating Mask
This is such a great product – now an essential on our top-shelf – because of its effectiveness and its versatility. We use about a quarter-sized amount and leave it on for 5-10 minutes before scrubbing it all over our faces. It’s great for collagen production, so we focus a lot of the product on our cheeks. When massaging we tend to focus on the sides and center of the nose since that’s usually where we have the most clogged pores. After a good scrubbing, we let it sit in for about 20 minutes (or until we remember to wash it off!). We also sleep in this mask if our skin is especially clogged. It’s seriously like a mini facial in a jar.
